Then don't!!! LOL
There is no law that requires you to do so. I was just suggesting it as an easy springboard for launching you in to the vast ocean known as ebay. You can sell almost anything on ebay.
There are, however, a number of things that you cannot sell on ebay. Yes, ebay has placed a restriction on some things that you cannot legally sell on ebay. The following ebay page lists such items that either cannot be listed (things such as explosives and machine guns), as well as things that are restricted or have strict guidelines that need to be followed. The page: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html
It is up to the seller to know and follow the rules and guidelines for selling on ebay. Sure, you may make a mistake or two here and there and end up listing something you shouldn't have, or not listing something correctly or 100% by the ebay rules. We all make mistakes. Ebay reserves the right to literally remove your listing from its website if the listing is deemed not to be in accordance with its rules and regulations.
Chances are, ebay likely won't catch minor infractions. However, any ebay user can simply report any listing to ebay. Ebay reviews those listings, and if it the listing is found to contain a minor error, ebay may leave the listing as-is, and send the seller an email informing the seller of actions needed to bring the listing in to compliance. Or, ebay may yank the listing altogether, THEN inform you of their actions, and what you need to do to list the item again, this time, hopefully in accordance with ebay's policies.
Here is one example of something I listed a while ago. I acquired a couple vintage, unopened six-packs of vintage Cincinnati beer. I intended to list the six-packs on ebay as unopened collectibles. I certainly didn't want to open each can and pour the contents down the drain. The value of the collectibles rested in the unopened nature of the set, and opening each one for the sake of pouring the beer down the drain would have effectively killed the value of the six-packs. I paid $5 per each six-pack.
Ebay has the following regulations associated with selling beer on ebay: http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/alcohol.html
So, pursuant to the regulations, I had to place (by means of simple copy-and-pasting) in my two six-pack listings the five stipulations mentioned on that page.
How much did I sell the six packs for? One sold for $50 and another sold for $75. Quite a nice profit on a $5 item!
So take heed of the ebay rules and regulations. They really are there for the betterment of the site, but are most likely REALLY there due to our own laws and regulations. Ebay is known for its strict adherence to laws.
So, if you prefer not to sell older vintage items, that's perfectly OK. I promise you won't hurt my feelings at all. I was merely making a suggestion in order to get your foot in the door.
You may sell almost anything under the sun on ebay- as long as you are in compliance with the rules and regulations page I listed above.
Like jewelry? Can you make your own unique style of jewelry? Why not sell them on ebay?
Are you a fashion designer? Can you sew and make clothing? Make some unique pieces and sell them on ebay.
Can you fix old cameras? Buy older broken cameras at yard sales, fix them up and sell them to collectors for a hefty profit.
Can you paint? Sell your paintings on ebay.
One gentleman I know goes around to local brick-and-mortar jewelry shops and buys up the clearanced jewelry lots that these stores sell. He buys all the old un-sold inventory from these mom-and-pop stores at deep discounts, then sells the pieces individually on ebay. Seems to do quite well at it, too.
