Storage Space?

Yes, storage space. Where do you plan on storing all your ebay inventory? If you only intend on maintaining an inventory of 50 - 100 items at all times, it probably isn't too much of an issue. That's how I started. Then, I grew in to a one-man operation holding 2 - 3000 separate items in ebay inventory.

I started out by building a couple simple wooden racks out of ordinary 2x4's and plywood in one of my spare bedrooms. When I out-bought that storage space, I began renting those off-site storage rooms. At first I rented a 12 x 12 and paid monthly. Then I outgrew that. I currently rent a fairly large 20 x 40 unit, and pay annually. I know most people won't be able to pay annually, but in doing so I was able to shave off 35% off if I had paid month-to-month.

My #1 rule is take care of the customer, and #2 is take care of the bottom line. Saving 35% is almost like getting a 35% raise, of sorts. When was the last time you received a 35% raise?

Most reputable storage facilities are secured and protected with surveillance cameras, so it wasn't a big concern for me to use the ones I did. Besides, someone had better be pretty hard up to break in to a storage unit which is likely contained with such low-valued items as old bed mattresses and bags of clothes. Not too much of anything valuable is at most of the storage facilities I've been through. I never had an issue at any of my sites.

  1. That's true. In this case, you have to decide which type of storage is applicable in your situation. As you've said, you've already outgrown your own space so it was about time to rent a commercial one. And you saved more out of it. Getting your own storage locker ultimately depends on your needs.
